The writing dream

After I wrote the poem "It is too late to hide her," I had the most vivid dream. When I awoke the next morning I madly started writing it down before the images faded. I believe the act of writing that poem released something in me that will continue to linger. The dream was about owning myself as a writer. I won't go into all the crazy elements of the dream, basically it was a dream about owning myself, having the self-confidence to declare who it is I am. What stands out most about the dream is when I said this: I am a writer. That is what they pay me for. So, I'm going to hold onto those thoughts for a while. It feels good to keep them tucked just under my heart. My own little dream floating out there, even in my subconscious.

  2. Not all dreams are meant to be shared.

  3. Yes, hold onto those thoughts. It's also important to remember that you don't have to get paid for your art in order to be an artist. That writing makes you a writer (and that blogging counts too.)

  5. Your dream isn't just floating, my dear. It has already taken root.

  6. How interesting that your dream came after writing the poem. So many writers talk about a dream inspring a piece of work. Yet in this case, the dream was inspired by the act of writing.

Whatever it is, keep dreaming and keep writing, because your stuff is great! I love the poem (and you picked the perfect picture for it, too!)

  9. dreams are the first step to making it a reality. do you not get paid as a writer, in any capacity? you certainly have the talent for it.

  10. Don't you EVER forget that, because it is true and the first step to anything is realization of the dream!

  11. I used to write down my dreams, hoping to turn them into stories (I still have all that). Lately my dreaming is less inspiring. Last night for example I dreamed that it was time for Annual Membership meeting (from a job I left SIX years ago) and dinner was potluck and everyone brought dessert. All candy and cakes. It was grotesque, like T. H. White's description of Morgan Le Fay's castle. If you promise to keep writing, I'll promise to not ever turn that into a story.

  12. It feels awesome & powerful to own who and what you are. I tell my creative writing students that when you are in the process, you are a writer. If you don't choose to pursue it as a job or even a hobby, you can still be a Writer when you write from inside yourself.

I wonder why this is so hard for us sometimes? If we're shopping, we call ourselves Shoppers; when we're driving, we're Drivers.

    Rock on, you :)

  13. That's cool and you are so smart to write down the dream before you forget it.

  14. I'm glad your subconscious is seconding what we already know. You are a wonderfully talented writer. Now we want you to send that poem out and get yourself published.

  15. Ditto, what Suzanne said.
I LOVE your writing. You never fail to make me think, laugh, smile...

  16. Hope the people before me don't read my comment, but Blah, Blah, Blah. I know EXACTLY what you mean. You want to be PAID for your writing. For someone to say, "I value your writing enough to pay you for it". To be able to say with pride and certainty "I.am.a.writer.". I have the same dream, and someday I swear we WILL see it come to fruition.
