Mommy will you still be growed-up when we're growed-up?

Mommy will you still be a growed-up when we're growed-up? asked GIRL.

Yes, sweetie.

I DON'T WANT TO BE A GROWN-UP! stated BOY, with no moment of reflection whatsoever. He was sure.

You won't be a grown-up for a long time, BOY. It takes a long time to grow up.

Mommy, it takes a long time to be growed up? asked GIRL.

Yes, GIRL. A long time.

Girl is so literal. I think she'd be disappointed if I told her that once you become a grown-up, it doesn't mean you always act like one. It is not as if POOF ....now I've GOT IT, I'm a GROWN-UP. If only she really knew just what the process takes and what a journey it continues to be... Take me for example, if I was a growed up person I wouldn't be sitting here eating ice cream straight out of the carton. I think I'll be a kid for a while longer....enough growed-up stuff to deal with tomorrow.

  1. see, i feel exactly the opposite-- being growed up means i get to stay up as late as i want and bake cookies while dancing in my kitchen and gazing into the loving screen of my laptop while IMing a friend and writing love notes. heh. take that kids: you got nothin.

  3. I don't mind being a grown up, as long as I don't have to always act grown up! Being silly and making kids laugh is so much fun. When I taught preschool we did a project with them where we asked each one, "Why is it better to be a kid than a grown up?" I wish I had recorded their answers because they were hilarious!

This is unrelated, but I wanted to ask how you find the ads on your blog - I love the ones you have had so far. What was the one - girlinc? Also, it's funny, I told Jim the other day, "If I put an ad on my site it would have to be one like Dove that I could be proud of", then you had a Dove ad!

  4. I often think about the whole grown-up thing, don't feel as if I've yet acheived it, although the mortgage, the two kids and the mini-van beg to differ. But what if I feel 18 still?

  5. I think one of the charming aspects of having children is that people expect you to act like one and participate in their world which is so excellently stalling in our unrequested quest for adulthood.

  6. if eating ice cream from the carton is a benchmark, I'll still be a kid when I'm 111.

  10. This is soo sweet. My girl is the one who never wants to grow up. The boy is certain: he can't wait. But it's oh so bitter sweet, thinking of them as adults. I will miss these sweet creatures, just as I will miss my not-old, middle-aged self when my children are adults.

  12. I love the fact that you said, "growed-up."

And BTW, do you have these philosophical conversations with your kids on a daily basis? I'm impressed!

  13. Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional. As a number of my friends like to say, we still don't know what we want to be when we grow up. Although after 20+ years of employment outside the home, the mommy job is by far the best I've ever had.

  14. I still have days where I feel like a sixteen year old and just want my parents to take care of all the stuff. Then I remember, oh yea, I have to do it. I'm the grownup.
