She is so capable, I sometimes forget that she is only 4

I love how GIRL always asks me for a hug and a kiss before I go somewhere. Then she hugs me tight and kisses me on my shoulders and head in loud smooching noises, like a cartoon. She has 4 freckles on her nose now, but those round, round cheeks are still there. She frequently calls out..."Mommy? I love you," from another room. I love holding her hand when we walk together. I can feel that she is in-between where she's been and where she's going. In many ways she is easy to be with. Friends frequently say that talking to GIRL is like talking to someone much older. She is so capable, I sometimes forget that she is only 4. She is all about doing everything by herself. Except at night, after we've read the last story...she wants to be carried to her room. "Mommy, carry me." She is "too tired to walk." And I carry her because just for that brief walk across the house, I get a glimpse back in time to when I was putting her to sleep in her crib...

  1. *Awwww....* are all 4year olds like that? I had one who just left that age (and I'm already missing it) and another 'marching' towards it...

  2. Awww, I have those flashbacks too. I love it when they say I love you all the time and are easy to be around.

Yesterday, while Christmas shopping, I was having flashbacks of being there with my stroller and two kids. I know they must have been challenging, but it seemed all rosey to me!!

  4. Whenever I read your posts, I get a vivid sense-memory of what it like to be with a child that age again. Your writing is so immediate and so alive.

I have spent the week caring for an old person, and there's a funny similarity between the very old and the very young, their impatience, their needs, their demands.

  5. I know exactly what you mean. The Queen daily astonishes me with her independence and intelligence. Although lately it seems as if she's turned 14. She only tells me she loves me if she's done something she knows she's not supposed to.

  6. I'm so glad that you are reveling in these precious moments; they do pass quickly. Each phase and stage is a challenge and an opportunity "to parent" with love.

I miss my 4 year old a lot.

  10. Such sweetness. My girl is 7 and she still asks to be carried to bed sometimes. Maybe you have a few more years of that left, too.

    This was lovely.

  11. That is why I'm enjoying it so much right now, because I know the day will come too fast when I can't carry him anymore.
    GIRL sounds like a sweetheart.

  12. I sighed as I read this. It was like wrapping myself up in a warm, soft quilt.

  14. Yes.

I still love carrying my kids to bed - even though my boy is 10 and almost my height, and my girl's legs are as long as mine...
