Today we had to put our Soul Man to sleep

He was the cutest black lab puppy ever. He entered our lives when he was 5 weeks old. He was so tiny that he could ride around the back of E's neck like a scarf. I will never forget how fast he was, tearing around a ball field with other dogs...flying like the wind. Or how he chewed up a pair of hiking boots and two pairs of dress shoes - all mine. We named him Soul Man.

Today we had to put our Soul Man to sleep. He was 13 1/2. He will be missed by all of us. Safe travels, Soul Man! May you find your legs again...and fly.

  1. I'm not sure how I stumbled on your blog, but I'm glad I did. Sorry to hear about your pet. My dog is really my "first" kid. Thank goodness my real kid and the first one get along so well :)

  2. Oh, I'm sorry. It's so hard to lose a pet, they really are beloved family members. My thoughts will be with you and your family as you grieve your loss.

  4. Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

  12. oh, I am so sorry. Pets are family, I believe that. i recommend the book DOG HEAVEN by Cynthia Rylant. her book Cat Heave was very helpful to us as we had to put a string of 4 cats to sleep (not all at once, but we got the book as a gift with the first, and pulled it out each time we had to do it again)

  13. He was the same age as my girl is now. I never want to let her go, though I know it's all inevitable. Good thoughts to all of you as you get used to being left behind. He was a beautiful pooch.
